Pacemakers
Sometimes the natural pacemaker system of the heart doesn’t
work well, and requires an artificial pacemaker. An artificial pacemaker
is a small device, about the size of a small cookie. This small
device can have one or two small wires which connect this small
device to the heart. Typically it takes 1-2 hours to place this
device. There are some risks involved in placing a pacemaker. There
is a very small risk of perforation of the heart, collapse of the
lung, infection, and an extremely small risk of death. After having
a pacemaker placed, rarely people can have a strange sensation when
the pacemaker activates the heart.
Pacemakers typically last for about 5 or more years. People with
pacemakers usually visit their doctors once every six months, and
sometimes longer to check the pacemaker. Pacemakers can be checked
through a computer, without needing an incision. Sometimes pacemakers
can be checked through the telephone or over the internet.
People can lead normal lives with pacemakers. There are sensors
which detect activity, and can raise the heart rate accordingly.
