How The Electrical System of the Heart Works
The heart pumps blood to the vital organs of the body. There are
two main pumping chambers, the atria and ventricles. The electrical
system of the heart is a timing system to provide efficient blood
flow through the heart to the other parts of the body.
The natural pacemaker system called the SA node fires, and activates
the atria. This in turn causes the atria to squeeze blood into the
ventricles.
Once the electrical signal passes the atria, it pauses at the AV
node. This pause allows the atria to finish squeezing the blood
into the ventricles.
Then the electrical signal goes down a superfast electrical highway
called the His bundle, and the bundle branches to activate the ventricles.
This in turn squeezes the blood from the ventricles to the rest
of the body.
